Maryland Democrats Downplay New York Socialist Primary Wins

Maryland Democrats are rejecting the idea that recent socialist primary wins in New York point to a wider shift in the Democratic Party. Several lawmakers said the results reflect local district politics rather than a national trend as the party prepares for the midterm elections. Sen. Chris Van Hollen said Democrats are a “big tent” party and argued that voters should decide which candidates represent them. Rep. Jamie Raskin also defended room for different views inside the party, while other Maryland Democrats said they respect the outcomes even when they disagree with the candidates. The debate has grown after three farleft candidates won New York Democratic primaries, including two challengers who defeated sitting incumbents. Veteran strategist James Carville criticized some of the nominees’ views, while moderates continued to stress the need for Democrats to unite around winning control of Congress.
