New York City erupted on Saturday night after the Knicks won their first NBA championship in 53 years, beating the San Antonio Spurs in Game 5 of the Finals. Fans gathered around Madison Square Garden, flooded Times Square and celebrated across the city as the team completed a longawaited title run.
The night also saw serious disorder. Police said some fans clashed with officers, damaged vehicles, climbed on buses and other structures, and set one bus on fire. A 17yearold was shot near 42nd Street and Broadway, and four other people were stabbed or slashed. Authorities said 63 people were arrested.
The victory ended a 53year championship drought for the Knicks and brought a planned parade and City Hall ceremony later in the week. Team owner James Dolan and Mayor Zohran Mamdani both urged fans to celebrate safely.
