Defendant apologizes to B.C. writer before defamation trial

BC defamation case apology adds urgency to Steven Galloway’s trial coverage See how the last-minute statement could shape the court battle and public fallout

One of the defendants in a British Columbia defamation case has apologized to writer Steven Galloway just days before the trial is set to begin in B.C. Supreme Court. Chelsea Rooney said she helped circulate unproven allegations and took part in collecting complaints against Galloway. In her statement, she said those actions caused serious harm to his reputation, career, and personal life, and that she regrets her role in it. Galloway, a former University of British Columbia professor and novelist, sued several people in 2018 over accusations of sexual assault that he has denied. The case has moved forward after years of appeals, and the trial is expected to start Monday.
