Australia opened its World Cup campaign with a 20 win over Turkey in Vancouver on Saturday night.
Nestory Irankunda scored in the 27th minute and Connor Metcalfe added a second in the 75th, while goalkeeper Patrick Beach made eight saves to preserve the clean sheet. The result marked Turkey’s return to the tournament after a 24year absence.
Turkey controlled much of the match and created more chances, but Australia defended well and took advantage of its key opportunities. The teams are in Group D with the United States and Paraguay.
