No charges for Alberta sheriff who used AI to create sexualized images of co-workers

Alberta Sheriffs AI image scandal raises workplace safety concerns Watch how investigators handled the case and what it means for consent

An Alberta Sheriffs peace officer will not face criminal charges after using artificial intelligence to create intimate images of women, including coworkers, without their consent. Alberta’s police watchdog, ASIRT, said the officer’s actions were serious and could have lasting effects on the women involved and their sense of safety at work. The investigation began earlier this year after a family member found AIgenerated photos on the officer’s phone and the employer became involved. According to the report, the officer admitted to using an AI app to make sexualized images from nonintimate photos taken from social media. ASIRT said there was no evidence the altered images were shared, and that the conduct did not amount to a criminal offence under the laws in place at the time. The officer has been removed from active duty while the Alberta Sheriffs conduct an internal investigation.
