The Toronto Maple Leafs have hired Daniel Alfredsson as an associate coach, bringing the former Ottawa Senators captain to the team’s bench after three seasons as an assistant coach in Ottawa.
The Leafs also announced that John Gruden and Brad Werenka are joining Jim Hiller’s coaching staff as assistant coaches. At the same time, Mike Van Ryn and Derek Lalonde will not return next season.
Alfredsson, 53, played most of his NHL career with Ottawa and was a central figure in the rivalry between the Senators and Maple Leafs. He finished his playing career with 1,157 points in 1,246 regularseason games and was inducted into the Hall of Fame.
