Firefighters battle wildfires in Portugal and Greece
Wildfires in Portugal and Greece strain crews as blazes spread across Europe See how firefighters, aircraft, and evacuations are battling dangerous smoke
Hundreds of firefighters were working on Sunday to contain wildfires in Portugal and Greece, with Spain and Italy sending help as crews tried to control major blazes across southern Europe.
In central Portugal, more than 1,200 firefighters, supported by aircraft and ground vehicles, were fighting a fire in the Vouzela area that began on Thursday and had burned about 12,000 hectares, according to European satellite data.
In Greece, authorities warned residents in parts of Thessaloniki to stay indoors because of toxic smoke from a recycling plant fire that spread during a wildfire on the city’s outskirts. Evacuation alerts were issued for nearby suburbs, and officials said a 76yearold man was arrested on suspicion of causing the blaze through negligence.
