Experts urge verified weather reports after kayak capsize in B.C.
AI weather safety for paddlers in B.C. with verified marine forecasts and alerts Check trusted sources before launching and stay safer on the water today
Maritime first responders in British Columbia are warning paddlers not to rely on AI chatbots for weather information after a kayaker capsized in Howe Sound.
Jonathan Levine and his wife Jane set out from Furry Creek for a morning kayak on Sunday and used an AI chatbot to help choose the safest time and route. Conditions changed quickly near Minaty Bay, where tall waves flipped Levine’s kayak and left him struggling in the water for about 15 minutes.
Two nearby boaters, Adrian Ward and Travis Welsh, spotted the capsized kayak and pulled Levine to safety. He was not injured, and his wife reached shore safely. Rescue experts say people on the water should check multiple verified sources for winds, tides and currents, including Environment Canada and the Government of Canada marine forecast, and carry a marine VHF radio.
