An 18yearold Hearst resident is facing a firstdegree murder charge after an Ontario Provincial Police constable died during an attempted arrest on Tuesday in northern Ontario.
Police said Const. Tarun Bali was struck by a vehicle in Hearst, about 600 kilometres northwest of Sudbury, around 12:30 p.m. The accused, Justin Veronneau, is also facing charges including dangerous driving, flight from police, assaulting a peace officer and resisting arrest.
OPP said Veronneau had fled from a hospital where he had been held under the Mental Health Act before the incident. He remains in custody while investigators continue their work with the Criminal Investigations Branch, the Chief Coroner and the Ontario Forensic Pathology Service.
