EU ambassador says Canada and Europe should deepen ties
EU-Canada relations: strengthen trade, tech, energy and security ties Explore why both sides want a closer partnership beyond the current deal
The European Union’s ambassador to Canada, Geneviève Tuts, says the EU wants to strengthen its relationship with Canada and explore a closer form of cooperation.
Speaking on CBC’s Power & Politics, Tuts ruled out EU membership for Canada but said both sides should look for something “stronger” than the current arrangement. She said geographic limits make membership unrealistic, but argued that Europe and Canada can still build a more ambitious partnership.
The comments come as Prime Minister Mark Carney has been emphasizing Europe’s role in supporting the international rulesbased order. Carney recently attended a European leaders’ summit in Armenia, where he said that system needs to be rebuilt. Tuts said the EU is aligned with that view and wants to deepen ties in areas such as trade, technology, energy and security.
