B.C. municipal leaders seek uniform e-scooter rules

B.C. e-scooter rules need provincewide consistency for safer daily travel Municipal leaders want clear laws as police crack down on unsafe riding

Municipal leaders in British Columbia are urging the provincial government to create consistent rules for escooters and other personal electric vehicles across the province. They say current regulations vary from one municipality to another and that the B.C. Motor Vehicle Act has not kept up with changes in how people travel. New Westminster Mayor Patrick Johnstone said the devices are already part of daily transportation and that the province's laws and infrastructure need to catch up. Langley City Mayor Nathan Pachal also backed a provincewide approach, saying many people want clear rules and want to follow them. The call comes as police continue to warn about unsafe and illegal riding of escooters and ebikes, including youth using electric or small gaspowered motorcycles on roads where they are not allowed.
