B.C. hospital data shows rising e-scooter injuries among children

E-scooter injuries among children and youth are rising fast in B.C. See the latest data, common risks, and what safety rules may change.

New data from B.C. Children’s Hospital shows that escooterrelated emergency visits among children and youth have increased sharply over the past year, with 81 cases recorded from April 1, 2025 to March 31, 2026, compared with 37 the year before. Hospital staff say many of the injured riders were younger than the province’s legal minimum age of 16. Children ages 13 to 15 made up the largest share of visits, and common injuries included fractures, bruises, abrasions and concussions. Doctors and road safety advocates say the rise points to gaps in public awareness and enforcement. They note that helmet use, speed and age restrictions are central safety issues, while some municipalities and school districts are tightening local rules in response to injuries.
