Quebec reviews truck safety measures amid rising fatal collisions

Quebec is facing renewed concern over road safety after a series of fatal collisions involving heavy vehicles, including a recent crash in SaintHyacinthe that killed a 13yearold cyclist. Provincial data show that heavy vehicles were involved in 100 of Quebec’s 379 road fatalities in 2024, and truckrelated deaths increased again in 2025. The trend has prompted a public inquiry ordered by the chief coroner and a review of rules aimed at improving truck safety. Authorities say one major response has been stronger driver training. New requirements for Class 1 heavyvehicle licences now include mandatory instruction, replacing a system in which some drivers could qualify by passing exams alone.
