Vancouver school support workers vote overwhelmingly to authorize strike action

Vancouver school support staff strike vote escalates contract talks and job concerns See what the union says about concessions, notice and next steps for schools

The union representing support staff at Vancouver public schools has voted to authorize strike action as it continues contract talks with the school board. The International Union of Operating Engineers Local 963 said members voted nearly 97% in favour after ballots were cast over the weekend. The union says it could issue 72hour strike notice at any time, but it is still urging the Vancouver School Board to return to negotiations. According to the union, the dispute centres on proposed concessions that it says would affect working conditions and job security. The organization represents about 900 workers, including custodians, building engineers, chefs, bakers, culinary assistants, food service workers and supervision aides.
