Iran negotiator warns U.S. to uphold terms of new deal

Iranian parliament speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf warned that Tehran would not carry out its commitments under a newly signed memorandum with the United States if Washington does not meet its own obligations. The warning came after President Donald Trump and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian digitally signed the agreement on Wednesday. The memorandum is intended to support an end to the war and restore traffic through the Strait of Hormuz. It also outlines major economic relief for Iran, while leaving several of the most difficult nuclear issues for further negotiation over the next 60 days. Ghalibaf, who has long been linked to Iran’s hardline security establishment, was joined by other Iranian officials who issued threats toward the United States. U.S. officials responded by saying Iran would face consequences if it failed to reach a final deal, as both sides continue talks over the agreement’s next steps.
