B.C. officials prepare for more wildfire activity as dry lightning continues

British Columbia officials are warning that dry lightning could lead to more wildfire starts across the southern Interior. Environment Canada meteorologist Colin Fong said the province is so dry that much of the rainfall evaporates before reaching the ground. The BC Wildfire Service says recent lightning activity could produce as many as 150 new fires in a single day. Fire restrictions are already in place in parts of the province, including a ban on all fires except small campfires in the Northwest Fire Centre. Officials said the drylightning risk comes while crews are still dealing with the Brunswick complex of fires, which has already driven higher fire activity earlier in the week. They expect elevated wildfire conditions to continue as the weather pattern persists.
