FIFA faces backlash over plan to sell stake in World Cup business unit
FIFA commercial stake plan faces backlash as UEFA and Concacaf reject sale See how the $4.2B proposal could reshape World Cup revenues and governance
FIFA is facing strong opposition to a proposal to sell a 20% stake in a new subsidiary that would manage the commercial side of the World Cup. UEFA and Concacaf have both rejected the plan, arguing that the tournament should not be treated as an investment asset.
According to FIFA, the new entity, called FIFA Forward Enterprise, could help raise about $4.2 billion from outside investors and value the unit at roughly $20 billion. The organization said it will continue consulting its member associations and move toward a vote despite the criticism.
The dispute has widened concerns about private equity’s growing role in sports. UEFA warned that outside investors could bring pressure focused on financial returns, while FIFA said its commercial activities would remain unchanged unless a majority of its members support the proposal.
