Over 80 wildfires extinguished in Ontario over two weeks

Ontario wildfire update: 80+ fires extinguished as crews battle 159 active blazes Rain, cooler weather and aid from Mexico help Ontario crews protect communities

Ontario Natural Resources Minister Mike Harris says more than 80 wildfires have been extinguished in the past two weeks as conditions improve in parts of the province. He said 159 fires remain active, including 30 that are burning out of control. Recent rain and cooler weather have helped crews, along with more than 100 firefighters sent from Mexico to support Ontario teams. Emergency Preparedness Minister Jill Dunlop said 14 communities have evacuated because of the fires. Five communities have already returned home, another is in the process of doing so, and more than 2,000 people remain displaced. The province continues to face questions about its wildfire response, including calls from some First Nations leaders for a public inquiry.
