A Toronto police inspector has been charged with impaired driving after officers responded to a report of a person asleep in a stopped vehicle in the Laird Drive and Eglinton Avenue East area early Sunday morning.
Police said Insp. Michael Hayles was arrested shortly after 6 a.m. and was off duty at the time. He faces charges of impaired operation and impaired operation with blood alcohol concentration over the legal limit.
Hayles has served with Toronto police for 30 years and was assigned to 55 Division. He has been suspended with pay under the Community Safety and Policing Act. The Senior Officers Organization said it would not comment on the case, but said the arresting officer acted appropriately.
