Former federal MP Chris Alexander has entered Toronto's crowded mayoral race, registering at city hall on Wednesday and saying the city needs a clearer sense of direction.
Alexander said he is running as an outsider who can help address problems he sees in city services, transit, housing construction, and homelessness. He said he will outline specific policy proposals in the coming weeks.
The race now includes 33 candidates. Incumbent mayor Olivia Chow is seeking reelection, while Coun. Brad Bradford remains her main challenger in early polling. Alexander's past as immigration minister and his controversial 2014 bill also drew attention during the announcement.
