U.S. forces launched strikes against Iranian targets on Tuesday, shortly before the planned restart of a naval blockade affecting ports near the Strait of Hormuz, according to U.S. Central Command.
CENTCOM said the strikes were intended to reduce Iran’s ability to attack commercial shipping through the strategic waterway. The blockade was scheduled to resume at 4 p.m. ET after being lifted last month under a temporary ceasefire.
The ceasefire has come under strain in recent weeks, with both Washington and Tehran accusing each other of breaking the agreement. President Donald Trump said last week that the truce was over after a series of new flareups in the region.
