Gordie Howe bridge cost remains at $6.4 billion despite delays

The Windsor Detroit Bridge Authority says the Gordie Howe International Bridge still carries a total contract value of $6.4 billion, even though the project has faced repeated delays. The bridge is intended to connect Windsor, Ontario, and Detroit, Michigan. Canada has covered construction costs up front and plans to recover them through tolls over several decades, after which the two governments will share revenue from the crossing. The project’s budget was revised to $6.4 billion in early 2024 after pandemicrelated disruptions pushed back the opening date. The bridge was later delayed again, with officials saying Canada and the United States agreed to take more time to resolve outstanding issues. Windsor West Conservative MP Harb Gill said he wants more detail about the delays and whether costs are being absorbed by the private consortium involved in the publicprivate partnership. U.S. Ambassador to Canada Pete Hoekstra also said the higher project cost and later timeline are factors in ongoing discussions about the bridge’s opening.
