Schumer and Democrats launch elections task force as SAVE America Act stalls
Senate Democrats launch elections task force amid voting law battles See how the move could shape voter ID fights, access rules, and 2026 races
Senate Democrats have formed a new task force focused on elections as Republicans struggle to advance the SAVE America Act, a voter ID and citizenship verification bill backed by President Donald Trump.
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said the group will examine what Democrats describe as threats to free and fair elections, including federal agency actions, foreign interference, attacks on the First Amendment, and the presence of law enforcement at polling places. The effort includes support from former Attorney General Eric Holder, attorney Marc Elias, and others.
The move comes after a Supreme Court Voting Rights Act ruling and amid a broader fight over election law, redistricting, and voting access. The White House says Trump is seeking more accurate voter rolls and a national standard for photo ID, while Democrats argue the proposed legislation could limit access for millions of eligible voters. Republicans remain divided over the bill, which failed in the Senate last month.
