Kyiv drone and missile attack kills 21 as Russia intensifies bombardment See the damage, responses, and what the strike means for Ukraine's air defenses
Russia launched an overnight drone and missile assault on Kyiv that lasted about 11 hours, killing at least 21 civilians and injuring dozens more, according to Ukrainian officials. Emergency crews searched damaged apartment buildings as residents sheltered in subway stations during the attack.
Moscow said the strike was retaliation for Ukrainian attacks on Russian oil infrastructure. Ukraine said its forces had recently hit an oil refinery near Moscow and other militarylinked targets, while Russian officials described their own bombardment as aimed at military objectives.
The assault came amid continued fighting across Ukraine and renewed pressure on Kyiv to secure stronger air defenses, including Patriot systems. Diplomatic efforts to end the war have so far made little progress.
