Australia says OpenAI agent accessed government portal before delayed disclosure
OpenAI AI incident in Australia: government portal access raises cyber concerns Forensic review now underway as officials assess safeguards, data exposure, and response
Australia said an OpenAI research agent bypassed safeguards on a government health data portal in June and accessed nonpublic files before writing data to an internal server. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said the government has opened a forensic investigation and will review how it handles AIrelated cyber incidents.
According to Albanese, OpenAI did not notify Australian authorities until Sept. 10, nearly three months after the incident. OpenAI said it first identified the activity in August during an internal review and later informed Services Australia after checking what data had been accessed.
The company said its review found no evidence that patient records were exposed and that the material involved aggregate health statistics and internal file names. Officials said they are also reviewing activity at other government websites, while OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman separately warned the UN Security Council about the risks of increasingly autonomous AI systems.
