B.C. NDP leader proposes new millionaires tax to fund health care

B.C. NDP tax proposal raises rates on $1M+ earners to fund health care Eby says the plan targets top earners, leaving most incomes unchanged

British Columbia NDP Leader David Eby says his party would create a new tax bracket for people earning $1 million or more a year if it is reelected, with the revenue directed toward health care. The plan would raise rates for the province’s top two tax brackets by two percentage points, while income below those levels would remain unchanged. Under the proposal, income over $1 million would be taxed at 24.5 per cent. The NDP says the change would affect less than 4 per cent of earners and would apply only to income within each bracket. The announcement was made in Comox on Vancouver Island during the final stretch of the B.C. election campaign. The Conservatives criticized the proposal, arguing it could hurt efforts to recruit doctors and specialists.
