Iran said it had closed the Strait of Hormuz again on Saturday and warned ships to avoid the vital shipping route, while the U.S. said the waterway remained open and traffic was still moving.
The dispute came as Iranian and U.S. officials prepared for technical talks in Switzerland on Sunday. The negotiations are meant to build on an interim agreement reached earlier in the week to ease regional tensions and advance discussions on Iran’s nuclear program.
The announcement added pressure to the talks after renewed fighting in Lebanon and fresh Israeli strikes in the south of the country. U.S. officials said they were monitoring the situation, and President Donald Trump said the strait remained open for transit.
