Border library opens new Canadian entrance

The Haskell Free Library and Opera House, which sits on the QuebecVermont border, has opened a new entrance on the Canadian side after U.S. restrictions limited access through the main door in Vermont. The library announced the new door at a ceremony in Stanstead, Que., where local and crossborder officials said the project was meant to preserve the library’s shared role for both communities. Since October 2025, Canadians had been entering through a temporary side access point while the Canadian entrance was completed. Library leaders and speakers at the event described the building as a symbol of cooperation between Canada and the United States. U.S. officials had said the earlier access change was tied to concerns about illicit crossborder activity.
