Treasury to buy back up to $6 billion in longer-term debt
Treasury buybacks aim to boost bond market liquidity as yields hit multi-year highs See how the $6B operation may ease pressure on 10- and 20-year notes
The U.S. Treasury Department said it will buy back up to $6 billion of government debt in a Thursday operation aimed at improving market liquidity, with future buybacks set at at least $4 billion.
The move focuses on 10 and 20year Treasury notes, which have been less liquid and have seen yields rise to multiyear highs. The largerthannormal operation follows earlier guidance from Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent that the department would increase the size of these repurchases.
Markets reacted cautiously. Longdated Treasury yields moved higher after the announcement, even as officials said the buybacks are intended to support the functioning of the bond market. Analysts said the scale of the intervention may be modest relative to the size of government debt issuance and the broader market pressures affecting yields.
