DOJ Fraud Week Highlights Missouri PPP and SBA Fraud Case
Justice Department fraud crackdown targets PPP abuse and pandemic aid scams Missouri case and nationwide enforcement exposed $245M in alleged losses
The Justice Department is highlighting a nationwide fraud crackdown during its annual Fraud Week, including a Missouri case involving alleged misuse of small business aid. Federal officials say the broader summer enforcement effort led to more than 160 criminal defendants and about $245 million in intended losses to taxpayers.
One of the more unusual cases centers on Jamie Gray, who prosecutors say used the name of a real petcare company, Fur Lives Matter, along with several other claimed businesses to seek nearly $56 million in Paycheck Protection Program and Economic Injury Disaster Loan funds. Authorities allege Gray submitted 29 applications and received about $820,000.
Officials in Missouri say the case is part of a larger effort targeting fraud in federally funded benefit programs. The Justice Department, the Small Business Administration, and state authorities have also expanded coordination to identify and prosecute suspected fraud cases tied to pandemicera relief and other public aid programs.
