Carney says Alberta oil pipeline is likely, but not certain
Alberta oil pipeline: Carney says new route is more likely than not But no final decision is made yet—see what Ottawa and Alberta may do next
Prime Minister Mark Carney said a new oil pipeline out of Alberta is "more likely than not," while stressing that no final decision has been made.
In an interview with The Canadian Press on Friday, Carney said global demand for secure energy supplies, along with Canada’s goal of reaching Asian markets, makes a new pipeline more probable than not. He said the project is part of a broader agreement between Ottawa and Alberta, but added that there is still significant work ahead.
Carney also said there could be multiple route options for a pipeline and noted that any project would still need a company willing to build it. His remarks come as Alberta Premier Danielle Smith continues to support a route to the B.C. north coast, while other reports suggest Ottawa may be leaning toward a southern route with fewer environmental and political hurdles.
