Trial begins in Pearson airport gold heist case

Canada gold theft trial opens as accused insider pleads not guilty Crown ties fake airway bill to the $22M Pearson heist—see the evidence

A man accused in one of Canada’s largest gold thefts has pleaded not guilty as his trial opened in Brampton, Ontario. Prosecutors say Parmpal Sidhu was one of the insiders who helped arrange the 2023 heist at Toronto Pearson airport, where more than $22 million in gold and cash was taken from a cargo facility using a doctored air waybill. In court, the Crown said the fake document was created using Sidhu’s profile and that it helped another man collect the shipment. Witnesses and surveillance video were presented as part of the first day of testimony, while Sidhu’s lawyers questioned whether investigators had enough evidence to link him to the scheme. The stolen gold had been flown in from Switzerland before being unloaded at the airport cargo area. Several other people charged in the case have already seen charges dropped, admitted involvement, or are expected to go to trial later this year.
