SIU clears three Peel police officers in Mississauga shooting death

Ontario's Special Investigations Unit has cleared three Peel Regional Police officers of wrongdoing in the shooting death of a 44yearold man in Mississauga in late February. According to the SIU, police responded around 12:30 a.m. on Feb. 28 after a woman called 911 and said her husband might harm her and her children. She later told police he had firearms and was in a distressed mental state. The SIU said officers located the man near Erin Mills Parkway and Dundas Street West. During the pursuit, a taser was used but did not stop him. The report says the man then fired at least one shot toward officers, and gunfire was exchanged before he was found unresponsive and later pronounced dead. SIU director Joseph Martino said the officers were acting lawfully and that their use of force was reasonable. An autopsy found the man died from a gunshot wound to the head.
