Quebec unveils $87 billion renewable energy plan for 2050

Quebec’s government has announced a 25year energy plan aimed at having 77% of the province’s consumed energy come from renewable sources by 2050, up from 48% today.
Energy Minister Bernard Drainville presented the strategy in Varennes, northeast of Montreal, and said the share of fossil fuels in Quebec’s energy mix is expected to fall to 23% from 52%.
The plan would require $87 billion in investment for upgrades to hydroelectric facilities and new wind, solar and bioenergy projects. Officials said part of that amount overlaps with HydroQuébec’s separate $200 billion spending plan through 2035 to expand capacity and improve reliability.
