Durham police recruit Tyrone Magbitang dies in Ontario crash

Durham Regional Police have identified the recruit who died in a traffic collision Tuesday as 27yearold Tyrone Magbitang. Police said Magbitang was travelling to the Ontario Police College with another recruit when a transport truck and passenger vehicle collided near London, Ont., shortly before 11:30 a.m. The driver of the passenger vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene, while the other recruit was taken to hospital with lifethreatening injuries. Durham police described Magbitang as compassionate, dedicated and committed to public service. He joined the service as a special constable in May 2023 and was selected as a constable recruit in April. Ontario officials and Premier Doug Ford offered condolences, and investigators with the Ontario Provincial Police are continuing to look into the crash.
