Three Canadians isolating after hantavirus cruise outbreak
Hantavirus outbreak on MV Hondius prompts Canadians to self-isolate in Ontario and Quebec As officials monitor exposures, get the latest on the cruise ship outbreak and response
Three Canadians linked to a hantavirus outbreak on the cruise ship MV Hondius are selfisolating in Ontario and Quebec, according to the federal government.
Two passengers who had been on the ship returned to Canada after leaving the vessel on the South Atlantic island of St. Helena, and a third Canadian who was not on the ship but shared their flight home is also isolating after possible exposure.
Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand said the three people are asymptomatic and are being monitored by local health authorities. Ontario officials said the two residents in that province are not believed to pose a transmission risk, while public health teams continue daily checks.
The ship is carrying passengers toward Tenerife, where remaining travellers are expected to disembark, although the operator says that plan could change. Canadian officials said they are coordinating with health and consular partners as the outbreak is followed closely.
