One person dead after Toronto apartment fire

Toronto paramedics say one person died after a twoalarm fire at a highrise apartment building in Scarborough on Tuesday morning. Fire crews were called to the building near Neilson Road and McLevin Avenue at 7:39 a.m. When they arrived, they saw heavy black smoke and found the fire on the 16th floor. Officials said the unit was fully involved when crews entered. Deputy fire chief Paul Fitzgerald said firefighters found one adult with no vital signs during the search. The person was later pronounced dead at the scene and is believed to have been a resident or occupant of the unit. Residents on the 16th floor were evacuated while crews checked the building for safety, and investigators are now working with the Ontario Fire Marshal and Toronto police to determine the cause.
