A fuel spill in Picton, Ont., has contaminated Marsh Creek, prompting an ongoing cleanup and investigation by local and provincial officials.
Prince Edward County said the spill was found late Tuesday afternoon after fuel entered a stormwater system near Main and Bowery streets before reaching the creek. Municipal staff responded after noticing the smell of fuel and began efforts to contain the spill.
Officials say the spill is now contained, but cleanup and field sampling are still underway. The Ontario Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks is investigating the cause, and environmental consultants have been brought in to help. Residents are being asked to keep pets away from the affected area, while the Picton Water Treatment plant’s drinking water remains safe, according to the municipality.
