A new Associated PressNORC poll released as the U.S. marks its 250th anniversary found that only 25% of adults said America stands above every other country. Another 44% said the U.S. is among the greatest nations, while 30% said other nations are better.
The survey also showed skepticism about the American dream. Just 34% said hard work still leads to progress, while 51% said that belief is now outdated and 15% said it was never true.
Views differed sharply by party, with 57% of Republicans saying the American dream remains intact compared with 17% of Democrats. The poll also found President Donald Trump’s approval rating at 33%, with 67% disapproving, including broad disapproval of his handling of the economy. The survey was conducted April 1620, 2026, among 2,596 adults nationwide.
