U.S. President Donald Trump has signed an executive order that would impose a 50% tariff on a wide range of Canadian exports, escalating trade tensions between the two countries.
According to a senior administration official, the measure responds to Canada’s retaliation against U.S. trade policy and what the administration described as discriminatory treatment of U.S. motor vehicles, dairy, and alcohol. The new tariff rate is set to begin in 30 days.
Energy, potash, critical minerals, and fish are excluded, but many other goods that have been entering the U.S. tarifffree under the CanadaUnited StatesMexico Agreement could be affected. The White House said it will release a full list of the products covered by the order.
