Zuckerberg outlines Meta's AI capacity trade-offs
Meta AI strategy weighs selling excess compute as demand, spending, and returns clash. See how Zuckerberg plans to balance monetization with future products.
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said the company is weighing whether to sell some of its excess AI computing capacity or keep more of it for its own products and model development.
He made the comments during Meta’s secondquarter earnings call, where he said the company is seeing offers for compute at a premium but also needs enough infrastructure for upcoming AI tools, APIs, and agents. Meta has been expanding data center capacity while exploring ways to monetize it, including a possible cloud business.
The discussion came as Meta raised the low end of its 2026 capital spending guidance and warned that free cash flow fell sharply year over year. The company also faces investor scrutiny over its AI strategy, competition with other hyperscalers, and pressure to show returns from its large spending plans.
