A Nanaimo, British Columbia bar owner says recent crime in the city has left her frustrated after her daughter’s car was broken into near the business and belongings were taken.
Sonia Komen said the incident happened Monday, only weeks after her bar hosted the province’s public safety minister for an announcement about a $12 million program aimed at chronic offenders.
Komen said she was initially told to leave the vehicle untouched so it could be fingerprinted, but later learned the breakin may not be investigated because such incidents are common. Local public safety advocates say the situation raises questions about whether the government’s response is making a difference.
Komen said the breakin has shaken her confidence in public safety and left her feeling used after the earlier government visit to her bar.
