Winnipeg ranked least safe, Ottawa safest in Canadian polling

Winnipeg safety perceptions rank lowest in Canada, while Ottawa tops the list See how Canadians rated 15 cities and what shaped their views of urban safety

A recent Liaison Strategies poll found that Winnipeg is widely viewed as Canada’s least safe major city, while Ottawa was seen as the safest. The survey asked 1,500 Canadian adults to rate 15 cities as very safe, somewhat safe, somewhat unsafe, or very unsafe. More than half of respondents said Winnipeg was somewhat or very unsafe, and the city again placed at the bottom of the ranking, according to the poll. The results also showed Toronto, Saskatoon, Edmonton and Vancouver among the cities with the weakest safety perceptions. By contrast, Ottawa ranked first, followed closely by Quebec City. The poll suggests that media coverage, personal experience and stories from others all shape how Canadians view safety in cities they do not live in.
