Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre is asking Parliament to examine a federal proposal to turn unsold condominium units in British Columbia into affordable housing.
In a letter to the House ethics committee, Poilievre described the plan as a possible "condo bailout" that would benefit developers, bankers and investors. He argued the program could interfere with the market by supporting prices instead of allowing a correction.
Prime Minister Mark Carney has said the goal is to help Canadians who need housing. The proposal, announced June 19, is tied to broader efforts in B.C. to help buyers who are struggling to save for a down payment. Housing Minister Gregor Robertson's office had no immediate comment on the letter.
