Summer McIntosh withdraws from Canadian swim trials because of illness

Canadian swimmer Summer McIntosh has withdrawn from the rest of the Canadian swimming trials in Montreal after becoming ill during the competition. The 19yearold scratched Tuesday’s 400metre freestyle final after posting the fastest time in the heats, and she will not race in any other events this week. McIntosh said the decision was made on medical advice from her doctors, Swimming Canada staff, and coach Bob Bowman. McIntosh had already delivered a standout performance at the trials, including a world record in the women’s 200metre butterfly on Sunday. Swimming Canada said she has already secured her place on Canada’s team for the Pan Pacific Championships in August, and McIntosh said she is now focusing on recovering and getting ready for that event.
