Quebec tightens licence transfers for some Ontario truck drivers

Quebec is introducing temporary rules that require some Ontario commercial truck drivers to pass a practical road test before transferring their licence in the province. The change applies to Ontario Class 1 drivers with less than two years of heavytruck driving experience. The province says the measure is meant to improve road safety after a series of serious crashes and growing concerns about driver training standards. Road safety advocates welcomed the move but said it will have limited effect unless broader industry problems are also addressed. Trucking industry representatives also support the tighter rules, while arguing that more reforms are needed. They say a national training standard similar to Quebec’s 615hour truck driver program could help close loopholes and create more consistent requirements across Canada.
