Maple Leafs leadership update adds Mats Sundin and John Chayka to reshape Toronto New front office aims to spark a quick turnaround after a rare playoff miss

The Toronto Maple Leafs announced a new leadership setup on Monday, naming franchise icon Mats Sundin as senior executive adviser of hockey operations and John Chayka as general manager. The team made the introductions in Toronto a day after confirming the hires. Sundin, 55, spent 13 of his 18 NHL seasons with the Maple Leafs, served as captain for 10 years, and enters management for the first time after retiring in 2009. Chayka returns to the NHL after nearly six years away. He was previously the league’s youngestever general manager when he was hired by the Arizona Coyotes in 2016. Toronto is reshaping its front office after missing the playoffs for the first time since 2016 and parting ways with general manager Brad Treliving in March.
