Quebec captive caribou population rises after 16 fawns are born

Quebec says its captive caribou population has increased since May after the birth of 16 fawns this season. The new births brought the total number of caribou in captivity to 75. The provincial environment ministry is overseeing three captive herds as part of efforts to help protect woodland caribou, a threatened species in Canada. Two of the herds produced new fawns, while the Vald'Or herd did not grow this year. Officials also said three fawns born in Charlevoix did not survive, and two pregnant caribou in Gaspésie died.
