B.C. schools set their own rules for e-scooters and e-bikes
BC schools set e-scooter and e-bike rules as safety concerns rise See which districts ban devices and how schools respond to violations
Schools across British Columbia are setting their own rules for escooters and ebikes as concerns grow about student safety and injuries on local streets. In some districts, certain devices are being banned on school grounds altogether.
District officials in Surrey, Langley, and Burnaby say the first step is usually to speak with students and contact parents rather than immediately punish riders. Administrators may take the device, explain the rules, and use the school code of conduct if a student continues to break them.
The province says school districts have the authority to decide what is allowed on campus, even in municipalities where escooters are permitted on public roads. Police generally handle violations on roads and sidewalks, while schools manage their own grounds. Officials also note that some students can still use ebikes to get to school if they meet age and speedlimit requirements.
