Carney backs U.S. strikes on Iran at NATO summit
NATO leaders back U.S. Iran strikes as tensions rise in the Gulf Carney calls the response justified, while allies push to ease the crisis
Prime Minister Mark Carney said the latest U.S. strikes on Iran were a justified response to ceasefire violations, speaking as NATO leaders met in Ankara, Turkey, on Wednesday.
U.S. President Donald Trump said the ceasefire was over and criticized NATO allies for not joining Washington and Israel in the conflict. He also said he was disappointed with the alliance and suggested he might have skipped the summit if not for his relationship with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
Carney said Iran had acted irresponsibly, including attacks on targets in Saudi Arabia and Qatar, and added that the U.S. response was appropriate. He also said the focus should now be on reducing tensions.
NATO leaders are expected to call for the Strait of Hormuz to remain open and for freedom of navigation to be respected as tensions continue to rise in the Gulf.
